Spaceship House: the COLORADO house with a story.
The spaceship house in Golden, Colorado, also known as the Sculptured House and Sleeper House, is a unique and captivating architectural marvel that stands out against the traditional houses in the surrounding neighborhood.
Living in Colorado for over 35 years, I have seen this house from the interstate hundreds of times. Being a REALTOR®, I was lucky enough to be able to tour the inside several years ago when it was for sale, prior to the most recent updating and additions by the current owners.
Built in 1963 by architect Charles Deaton, this house is a true testament to modernism and innovation. The design of the spaceship house was inspired by Deaton's fascination with space exploration and the possibility of life beyond our planet. He wanted to create a home that would look futuristic and stand out against the traditional architecture of the time.
The structure of the house is made up of a series of concrete triangles that form a shell-like structure. Its unique shape and angular lines are reminiscent of a spaceship from a science-fiction movie. The windows are equally impressive, as they are designed to offer a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, taking in views of the nearby Table Mountain, Clear Creek, and downtown Denver.
Inside, the spaceship house looks like something out of a sci-fi film, with an open-concept living space that includes a kitchen and living room, surrounded by a curved wall of windows. The master bedroom is on the upper floor and provides a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. The house also includes a lower-level guest suite and studio space with a separate entrance.
To maintain the authenticity of the house, a recent renovation preserved many of its original features and materials, including the brass hexagon-shaped fireplace and built-in furniture. Some modifications have been made to the house over the years, but the overall style of the house remains intact and faithful to Deaton's original vision.
The spaceship house has become a beloved landmark in Golden, well-known for its stunning, unconventional design and its impact on modernist architecture. It has been featured in numerous publications, and even appeared in Woody Allen's 1973 film Sleeper.
Although the spaceship house is privately owned and not open to the public, it still attracts visitors who come from all over to take pictures of this unique architectural masterpiece. Its design embodies the spirit of innovation and creativity that is an integral part of modernist architecture, and it serves as a representation of a time when architecture was breaking free from tradition and exploring bold, new forms.
The spaceship house in Golden, Colorado is a must-see attraction for anyone interested in modernist architecture or sci-fi-inspired design. Its unique shape, stunning views, and dedication to authenticity make it one of the most awe-inspiring houses in the world. You can easily view it from I-70 right outside of Denver.
